When Pigs Fly Ranch

The Inspiration That Started It All

It began with one special pig named Piggy. We crossed paths with Piggy on Thanksgiving Day in 2016. It was love at first sight, and she stole our hearts right away. She spent her days alone with limited companionship, but her warmth and affection were unmistakable. After a heartfelt conversation with her owner, we made the decision to create a dedicated sanctuary where Piggy could enjoy her days, and we could extend the same care to other animals in need. And so, When Pigs Fly Ranch came to life.

We were fortunate to have Piggy in our lives for over 5 years. She passed away in January 2022, at almost 14, but she will always be in our hearts.

Our objective at When Pigs Fly Ranch is to create a space where people can deepen their understanding of pigs, with the hope that, in the process, we can challenge and reshape perceptions about the role of pigs in our world.

Fun Pig Facts!

Pigs are fascinating animals with many intriguing characteristics. Here are some fun facts about them:

Highly Intelligent: Pigs are incredibly intelligent creatures, often ranking as one of the smartest animals on Earth (but unfortunately, also one of the most widely eaten). They have excellent problem-solving skills and can even learn tricks and tasks.

Excellent Memory: Pigs have remarkable long-term memories. They can remember and recognize other pigs and humans for years, and they're known for their keen memory of their surroundings.

Communication: Pigs are quite expressive and vocal animals. They communicate with each other using a wide range of vocalizations, from grunts to squeals, to convey different emotions and needs.

Social Animals: Pigs are highly social and form strong bonds with one another. They often live in tight-knit groups and are known to be very protective of their piglets or other pigs in need.

Clean Animals: Contrary to popular belief, pigs are quite clean animals. They avoid soiling their living spaces and will designate specific areas for waste.

Fast Runners: Pigs may appear plump and slow, but they can actually run at speeds of up to 11 miles per hour (18 kilometers per hour).

Great Swimmers: Pigs are excellent swimmers and are often used in water rescue training because of their natural swimming abilities.

Variety of Breeds: There are hundreds of pig breeds worldwide, each with its own unique characteristics, from the small and adorable pot-bellied pig to larger commercial breeds.

Omnivores: Pigs have a varied diet and are omnivores, meaning they eat both plants and animals. They are known for their love of foraging and rooting in the ground in search of food.
